About the Artist
J Leigh | Artist & Creator
I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. Creativity has always been how I make sense of the world, whether through music, performance, or visual art. But sometimes life has a way of rewriting the story we thought we were going to tell.
In 2015, I was diagnosed with stage IV esophageal cancer. What followed was years of treatment, surgeries, loss, and survival. I lost my ability to sing, a part of myself that had once been central to how I expressed who I was. (I was a classically trained singer pursuing a degree in vocal performance and theatre.) I faced endings I never imagined, and somehow, again and again, found myself at another beginning.
Art became the place where everything I could no longer say could still find a voice.
Today, my work is an exploration of contrast: softness and strength, chaos and structure, grief and beauty, darkness and light. I am drawn to organic forms, expressive color, delicate florals, bold geometry, and the unexpected things that happen when I allow the materials to lead. I love the tension between what we can control and what we must learn to let go.
Much of my inspiration comes from the natural world, human connection, and the complicated experience of being alive. My paintings often reflect transformation, resilience, vulnerability, and the quiet beauty of things that endure.
Surviving changed me. There is no returning to the person I was before. In some ways I am less, in others, so much more. I have learned that beauty doesn’t require perfection, that broken things can become something extraordinary, and that beginnings don’t always look the way we expect.
I don’t want my art to tell people what to feel. I want it to make room for them to feel something of their own.
More than anything, I create because I am still here. Because there is still beauty to discover, still something worth saying, and still so much life left to live.
